				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>OK.  You’re half way through your workout when you realize&#8230; &#8220;I FORGOT TO BRING MY POST WORKOUT DRINK!&#8221; <img class="alignright size-full wp-image-915" title="post-workout-shake" src="http://madreps.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/post-workout-shake.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="220" />  Don’t panic just yet!  A new study published in the <strong>Journal Of  The International Society Of Sports Nutrition</strong> found that that “window of opportunity” to attain anabolism is wider than previously thought…about 2 hours wider! </p>
<p>Ideally, if you are looking to increase your muscle size or strength you would have consumed  a pre-exercise meal or snack, with protein and carbs, about 1 &#8211; 2 hours before your workout to maximize performance, right?  Well, what this study found is that this meal or snack can conceivably function as <strong>both</strong> a pre- and an immediate post-exercise meal, since the timing of its digestion/absorption can carry well into the recovery period.   The researchers found that a relatively small dose of amino acids (only 6 g) taken immediately pre-exercise was able to elevate blood and muscle amino acid levels by roughly 130%, and these levels remained elevated for 2 hours after the exercise bout.   This data indicates that even minimal to moderate pre-exercise amino acids, or more importantly, high quality protein, taken immediately before weight training is capable of sustaining amino acid delivery into the post-exercise period.   The next scheduled protein-rich meal (whether it occurs even 2 hours post-exercise) is likely sufficient for picking up where the pre-exercise meal left off, maximizing recovery and anabolism. </p>
<p>Here’s the exception – <em>older adults</em>.  If you are over 50 and looking to build muscle, you don’t have the same luxury of waiting up to 2 hours.  Just like anything else as an older adult…you can still achieve greatness, it just requires a bit (or a lot) more work, dedication and effort .  So don’t forget your post workout drink!</p>
